Severe Toothache or Pain

If you’re dealing with a relentless, throbbing toothache, it’s a clear sign that something’s not quite right. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed, while waiting to visit the dentist.

Knocked-Out or Dislodged Tooth

Whether it’s from a sports injury or an accidental fall, having a tooth knocked out or dislodged is a dental emergency that needs immediate attention. Acting fast can increase the chances of successfully reimplanting the tooth and keeping it alive. Gently rinse the tooth with water, being careful not to remove any tissue. Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket and bite down gently on a clean cloth. If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk or saliva. 

Cracked or Chipped Tooth

These types of emergencies expose the inner layers of the tooth, leaving you vulnerable to infection and sensitivity issues. Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to the face to minimise swelling. Cover any sharp edges with dental wax or chewing gum to protect your tongue and cheeks.

Abscess or Infection

An abscess is a localised infection that can cause swelling, pain, and potentially serious complications if left unchecked. Often resulting from untreated tooth decay or gum disease, this dental emergency requires immediate treatment. Rinse your mouth with a warm salt water solution. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed.

Bleeding Gums or Mouth Injury

If you’ve sustained an injury to your gums or the soft tissues inside your mouth, excessive bleeding could be a sign of a more serious underlying condition or trauma. In these cases, it’s best to seek professional help right away. Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to stop the bleeding. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling.
